
Dr. Claire Kramsch
Emerita Professor, Department of German, University of California, Berkeley, USA
Claire Kramsch is Emerita Professor at the University of California, where, in addition to
teaching courses in German and Applied Linguistics, she was the founding director of the
Berkeley Language Center. Her areas of interest are applied linguistics, language learning and
teaching, language and culture, and multilingualism. Her many publications include Context and
Culture in Language Teaching (1993), Language and Culture (1998), The Multilingual Subject
(2009), and Language as Symbolic Power (2021). She is the past president of the American and
International Associations of Applied Linguistics, past editor of Applied Linguistics, and is
currently the coeditor of two book series with Routledge and CUP.
